Post-processing is not an offense

I'm often asked whether I post-process my pictures in Lightroom and Photoshop. Actually the question came up again yesterday evening in a thread on Facebook. The simple answer is "yes", I edit and process all my images. Which by the way is different from manipulating them. I never had any issue with post-processed images. Don't get me wrong, I like to nail the shot in-camera but if I don't or if I don't have the proper lighting set nor lens with me to translate my vision, technology becomes my best friend.
I changed a few things in my workflow over the years. Like many photographers the introduction of plugins and presets felt like Christmas Eve and I would use everything I could find. Up to the point where I felt the pictures were not mine anymore. Nowadays I usually don't spend more than 10 minutes on a picture. I always use the same tools and steps whether I want to produce B&W or color pictures. The workflow looks like this:
- Edit the picture in Lightroom (95% of the work is done there). When needed, apply and tweak presets (I use Replichrome I and II from TotallyRad!).
- Send the picture to Photoshop to clean it (e.g. sensor spots which couldn't be removed properly in LR). Adjust in Nik ColorEfex Pro when needed. Sharpen and optimize for the web.
- Done.

On me demande souvent si je retouche mes photos dans Lightroom et Photoshop. En fait le sujet a refait l'objet d'échanges sur Facebook hier soir. La réponse est simple: oui, j'édite et retouche presque toutes mes photos. Il y a d'ailleurs une différence entre retoucher et manipuler. Je n'ai jamais eu de problème particulier avec le fait de retoucher des photos. Ne vous méprenez pas, j'aime quand les clichés sont parfaitement produits directement dans le boîtier mais si je n'ai pas le bon kit d'éclairage ou le bon objectif avec moi au moment de capturer l'instant, la technologie devient alors ma meilleure amie.
J'ai modifié mon processus de développement avec le temps. Comme beaucoup de photographes, j'ai vécu l'arrivée des paramètres prédéfinis et des plugins comme un enfant qui ouvre ses cadeaux de Noël. J'utilisais tout ce qui me tombait sous la main au point où certains de mes clichés n'étaient plus les miens. Aujourd'hui je ne passe généralement pas plus de 10 minutes sur une image. J'utilise toujours ou presque les mêmes outils et passe par les mêmes étapes de développement, que ce soit pour produire des photos en noir et blanc ou en couleur. Le processus est le suivant:
- Edition des photos dans Lightroom (95% du travail est effectué dans ce logiciel). Au besoin c'est aussi là que j'applique les paramètres prédéfinis (j'utilise Replichrome I et II de TotallyRad!)
- Envoi de la photo retouchée dans Photoshop pour la nettoyer (par exemple enlever les poussières sur le capteur). Ajustements dans Nik ColorEfex Pro si nécessaire. Amélioration de la netteté et optimisation pour une diffusion sur le web.
- C'est tout.

Dans ce cas précis, presque tout le travail d'édition a été fait dans Lightroom (recadrage, récupération des ombres, ...). La balance des blancs et la saturation ont été retouchées dans Photoshop. C'est "too much"? Peut-être mais le résultat final me plait suffisamment pour le conserver ainsi. Les goûts et les couleurs...

In this particular case, most of the work was done in Lightroom (cropping, shadows, hightlights, ...). The white balance and hue/saturation were retouched in Photoshop. A bit overkill? Maybe but I like the rendering enough to keep it like this. Taste and colors...

This picture was selected as one of Viewbug's Best Shot Photo Contest Finalists. Actually it is one of my most awarded pictures and it is the one which triggered the discussion about post-processing. Funnily the original shot was taken by complete mistake and I was about to bin it when I realized I like the expression in the eyes. Thanks to the advanced sensors we have in our cameras these days I could edit the picture properly and retrieve an amazing amount of details. 99% of the work was done in Lightroom. Photoshop was only used to sharpen the picture to death.

Cette photo a été sélectionnée comme finaliste du concours Viewbug's Best Shot Photo Contest. En fait, c'est sans doute la photo de mon portfolio la plus primée et aussi celle qui a déclenché la discussion sur la retouche. A l'origine la photo aurait dû être supprimée car il s'agit d'un cliché pris par erreur. Mais comme j'aimais l'expression dans les yeux j'ai finalement décider de la développer. La qualité des capteurs actuels permet de récupérer une grande quantité d'information dans les zones sombres ce qui m'a permit d'arriver au résultat ci-dessous. 99% du travail a été effectué dans Lightroom. Photoshop m'a simplement permis d'augmenter la netteté au maximum.
